The Power of One More by Ed Mylett

What exactly is identity? I define it as the thoughts, concepts, and beliefs we hold as the most genuine parts of our inner being. You can put on a face or act a certain way for the rest of the world, but you can’t lie to yourself when it comes to these things. Deep inside, you know what’s true about you. ― Ed Mylett

In the opening words of Ed Mylett’s book, readers are challenged to consider that they are one deliberate thought and one deliberate action away from their best life! As a coach, author, entrepreneur, and podcaster Mylett has devoted his life to sharing what he has learned with individuals and organizations. The Power of One More: The Ultimate Guide to Happiness and Success, provides strategic concepts and actionable behaviors for those ready to move their lives forward.

There are two chapters that really represent the applicability of this book. The first (literally) focuses immediately on self-identity. Beyond just encouraging increased confidence, Mylett encourages readers to see their identity as the thermostat that can change the temperature of their lives. A thermometer measures the temperature. A thermostat can activate air conditioning or heating to change the temperature. Our identity can work in a similar manner to regulate our actions and our results. The trinity for changing our identity is faith, intentions, and associations.

Mylett also challenges readers to understand the power of being deliberate. When we strategically slow down our physical and mental being, we create the space that will allow our senses and brain to reset and focus on what matters. Several pages are dedicated to understanding the reticular activating system (RAS). Think about the experience of looking at a model of car…and then seeing those cars everywhere. Our RAS filters things into your awareness and filters out everything unimportant to you – allowing us to focus on what matters to us.

The key to One More Try is to be intentional. You must have the strength and the focus to take steps that will drive you closer to where you want to be in life. This is not always an easy thing to do. It requires a quiet determination to stay the course. ― Ed Mylett
