The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who can’t read them – Mark Twain
In previous generations, it was common to take on the role of an apprentice to learn a trade. Individuals would work alongside skilled workers to learn and pursue a career. In recent decades, many of us have similarly chosen mentors that can help us develop the skills and traits we desire for a career or even just a successful living. Sometimes we sought out a specific person or someone in a specific trade. Other times, we had the right person come into our lives at just the right time.
Who has mentored you? What skills did you learn or develop because of the influence of these individuals? Are there others that you would still like to seek out? Well, I have found that great books (or podcasts) can fill a portion of that gap (to an extent). Through these books and digital media, we have the opportunity to read the thoughts and teachings of a wide array of individuals that we might not interact with otherwise. In Scott Jeffrey Miller’s newest book, Master Mentors Volume 2 30 Transformative Insights from Our Greatest Minds, readers will be introduced to writers, teachers, and public figures that have insights that may benefit us personally and professionally.
For example, you may not know Marie Forleo but you’ll probably seek out her writings after Miller shares a little about her story and the one key idea that she shared on his podcast (On Leadership with Scott Miller). Everything is Figureoutable. Forleo describes growing up with a mother that inspired her to seek solutions and tackle challenges and believe that everything is figureoutable.
Or consider the key thoughts from others like Colin Cowie, Michael Hyatt, Guy Kawasaki, or Erica Dhawan. These leaders will introduce you to ideas and concepts ranging from digital body language to hospitality to time management. If you’re looking for your next great read or some principles to help in your journey, Master Mentors (both volumes) should be on your list.
I am chasing a guy. The man I am chasing is the better version of myself, the man I am capable of becoming, the man I was put on this earth to be. – Ed Mylett
